Volunteers
The Peace Village program relies heavily on volunteers from churches, the business community, educators, and other individuals with a wide variety of knowledge, skills and abilities. Volunteers do not need to sign up for an entire task and can arrange to help for just one or two days; for example, picking up and delivering coffee for two days or assisting with one enrichment activity. We need to set up a firm schedule, so please contact our Peace Village Coordinator, Bonnie Poloner, as soon as you know you can help us. Contact Bonnie at volunteers@peacevillagenm.org.
Peace Village needs volunteers for the July 13-17 and July 20-24 camp sessions.
These are some of the tasks for which we need volunteers:
- Pick up a 30-cup coffee percolator of coffee and condiments from Milagro on University at 8 am each morning. Volunteer will need his/her own vehicle.
- Prepare snacks each morning for the campers. This involves about 2 hours of time and includes preparing and serving the snacks and cleaning up afterwards.
- Prepare lunches for 10 campers.
- Pick up donated staff and camper lunches from various restaurants and stores. Volunteer must pick up a letter for the restaurant or store, which is presented at the time of pickup. Volunteers need their own vehicles.
- Monitor campers during lunch to allow the staff a brief break. The first week of camp encompasses children entering grandes 6 through 10. The second week encompasses campers entering grades 1 through 5. We need three volunteers daily for this task, at least one of whom is bi-lingual. One volunteer will be in the lunchroom and two will be outside. This task includes a quick lunch set-up and a quick cleanup after lunch.
- Assist with Enrichment Activities. Bi-lingual volunteers would be very helpful. We have several enrichment activities for the campers. In the past, they have taken place in the afternoon. Usually, the activities last for about 1 hour and we need volunteers to help set up 10-15 minutes before the activity, listen to the instructor, help the children with instructions and then clean up after the project. Total time on-site will be approximately 2 hours.
- Wash campers reusable water bottles and return them to their designated locations.
- Daily cleanup at the end of the day. Although we have janitorial services, we pick up after ourselves at the end of each day. Cleanup occurs beginning at 3 or 4 pm depending on the final camp schedule.
